The Oink's Story

New Buffalo is located along the Southwest Michigan lakeshore and in the heart of Harbor Country.  It is known for it's tourism during the summer months. Here, you will find one of the town's hottest spots called "Oink's Dutch Treat Ice Cream & Yogurt Shop."

Founder, Roger Vink  had a dream many years ago of one day owning an ice cream shop.

Roger was the physical education teacher at New Buffalo High School for 23 years.  Back in the early 1980's, during his summer break from teaching, he and his wife, Sharon, would go canoeing in Baldwin, Michigan and stop for ice cream at "Jone's Ice Cream Shop."  Seeing the hustle and bustle of all the people on a hot summer's night eating their favorite frozen treat really got his wheels spinning.

So in 1987 his dream became a reality.  Roger's nickname is "Oink," and it was given to him by a long-time friend 30 years ago.  He thought that would be a catchy name for his business and he was absolutely right!

Now entering it's 25th season, with an average of 25 employees, it's growing in popularity every year!

"Oink's" is considered a tradition to most of it's customers.  With the slogan "You Deserve The Best," that's exactly what you will receive, from the service to the selection.

Featuring Sherman's finest ice cream in a wide-range of 58 flavors, including low-fat and fat-free yogurts, sugar free/fat free ice creams, there's definitely something for everyone. Choose from many of the unique flavors such as Chocomania, Cotton Candy Confetti, Blue Moon, Mackinac Island Fudge, and Yellow Cake Batter.

Eating your ice cream is only half the experience...the other half is looking at the highly decorated shop, from floor to ceiling.  Inside and out, you will find thousands of pig and nostalgic ice cream memorabilia items to occupy your time while eating your tasty treat.

Take advantage of strolling next door to "Oink's Chocolate Pig," candy and souvenir shop.  Here, you will find a large assortment of South Bend chocolates and fudge, kid's candy, as well as 40 flavors of Jelly Bellies.  We also offer a selection of gifts and souvenirs including piggy banks, toys, Webkinz, and "Oink's" t-shirts, hats, and keychains in an array of colors.

Semi-retired since 2001, Roger's daughter, Carey, manages the business.  Even though he's semi-retired, you will still see him at "Oink's" every morning.  You better be up early, around 4am to catch him....puttering around the property and continually adding to his collection of memorabilia.

So, if you're looking for a one-of-a-kind, fun, and exciting experience, make "Oink's" in New Buffalo you're next stop this summer!
